If you’re thinking of retiring abroad, Belize should be at the top of your list. Not only is it a beautiful, tropical country, but it also offers a number of benefits for retirees. One of the biggest advantages of retiring in Belize is the Qualified Retirement Program (QRP), which allows eligible individuals to live in Belize permanently. The Qualified Retirement Program (QRP) was created to facilitate eligible persons who have met the income requirements to live, retire, and relax in Belize permanently. Incentives and Benefits
The following incentives and benefits are provided to anyone who has been accepted into the QRP Program under the Belize Retired Persons Incentives Act:
Belize Residency Status – QRPs and their dependents shall receive a QRP Resident Card to reside in Belize, allowing multiple entries into the country without a Visa. *Resident card to be renewed annually*
Duty Exemptions – QRPs shall be entitled to import duty and tax exemption on the following, for personal use only, within the first year of acceptance into the program
Household & Personal Effects multiple entries allowed with no limit on the dollar value of effects
Motor Vehicle [Model must be within the last five years] – QRP’s are allowed to purchase a new vehicle every four  years with proper disposal of the previous vehicle
Light Aircraft [Model must be less than 17,000 kg]
Tax Exemptions – QRPs shall be exempted from all taxes and duties on income received from a source outside of Belize, capital gains tax, and inheritance tax
Ease of Purchasing Land – QRPs are entitled to purchasing land for the construction of a home or purchasing a home for residential use only
Engage in any employment in Belize
Carry on any business, trade, or profession within Belize if such business relates to activities carried on mainly outside of Belize and conducted exclusively with persons not resident in Belize
Make any investment in Belize
Practice philanthropy in Belize
Any person who is 45 years old or older and their dependents. Dependents include their spouse and minor children under the age of 18. A retirement income of $2,000 per month or $24,000 per year from a source outside Belize is required. The money must be sent via an official foreign currency (US dollars, British pounds, Euros, etc.) bank draft or electronic transfer to a Belizean bank account in your name. Retirement income includes pension, annuity, social security benefits, investment account(s), inheritance, reverse mortgage, personal savings, retirement contribution plans, and other means of retirement income.
Applicants must have a Belizean work permit or have worked in Belize for at least 12 months. They do not need to own real estate or investments in Belize. They must pass a security clearance check from the Ministry of National Security. They must also be able to reside in Belize for at least 30 days each year. Qualifying countries for this program include all Commonwealth countries (excluding Belize), the United States of America, the Member States of the European Union - commonly referred to as the EU, the Asian-Pacific countries of Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam, and all South American countries.
To apply for Belize's Qualified Retirement Program, you will need to submit a duly completed application that includes the following items:
Birth Certificate [Notarized or certified copy for applicant and each dependent]
Marriage Certificate [Notarized or certified copy]
Police Record [Original police record or certificate no older than 6 months from last place of residency for applicant and each dependent]
Passport Pages [Notarized or certified copy of complete valid passport including all blank pages for the applicant and each dependent]
Proof of Income [Certificate document showing the applicant as the recipient of retirement income amounting to a minimum of $2K monthly or $24K annually in an approved foreign currency]
Bank Statement certifying Retirement Income [original or certified copy of international financial statements from financial institute exhibiting the deposit of the sum stated above]
Written Undertaking of Deposit to Financial Institution in Belize [Undertaking letter signed by the applicant stating the deposit of the requisite funds into a local domestic financial institution] *include draft copy provided by BTB
Medical Certificate [Original certificate or lab report of complete physical medical examination inclusive of HIV Test results no older than 3 months required for applicant and each dependent]
Two (2) 2”x2” Frontal Passport Photos [1 recent notarized/certified passport photograph and 1 unnotarized/uncertified passport photograph of the same image for the applicant and each dependent]
